My name is Fatima Avila, and I’m from the Chicagoland area. I’m a first generation college student born to Mexican immigrants. I’m planning on concentrating in physics and philosophy (may be subject to change). Aside from my intended concentration, I’m also deeply interested in politics and art! In my free time I like to read and sketch. I’m so excited for to be a part of PSP!
Research
This past summer I took on an independent study centered on Latin American philosophy under Dr. Rafael Vizcaino at DePaul University. My work focused on understanding the role of religious aesthetics in Enrique Dussel's Liberation Philosophy as well as how these religious aesthetics challenge existing epistemological frameworks all while creating new ones. From this work, I've grasped a better understanding of the important role history, culture, and traditions play in the formation of authentic philosophies and the subsequent political action which arises.
